8.28.17 Seven Days without God makes one WEAK !

Hi there Everyone!

You know our time for these letters is coming to a close. I just want you all to know how grateful I am for EACH of you. Whether you are just reading my emails or someone I regularly talk to, I know you have played a huge part in my mission.

Over this time, my love for so many things has grown but especially my love for the Savior has grown. Yesterday, in sacrament meeting the talks were on faith and putting our faith into action. I have found that the only way I have been able to grow my faith and love for the Savior has been as I put it into action. One of the speakers truly took the symbolism of baptism to a whole new level for me. He said that when we are baptized we don't fall forward, we don't dunk ourselves, we don't just spring ourselves. We completely immerse ourselves. We fall back, putting all our trust in the person baptizing us. But really we are showing that we are fully and completely putting all our trust in the Lord. We are letting go of the things in the past and looking forward to the things to come. I have been so honored to watch my dear friends let go of so much to receive so much more.

I was excited to hear about our friend Ismael!  This is the guy we met in July saleing coconuts. HE GOT BAPTIZED the other day!!

What an amazing reminder to me that we never can tell where we will find that person who is truly ready to let go and trust in the Lord. He has moved up to Richmond for school but has been driving all the way to Crystal City to go to church. I know he has truly given up so much to make this promise with the Lord.

I am so grateful for this chance to witness these changes for myself.

I love you all! See you soon!

Love, Sister Goudy

Happy Birthday!

Yummy!

8.21.17 Wrong Roads

8.21.17

Hey everyone! I hope you have had a blessed week. This week was AWESOME!!! Lots of great things happened. I think the biggest lesson I learned this week is that what we think might be a mistake might actually not be a mistake at all. I'm telling ya, the Lord works in amazing ways!

It all started last Monday. We had just prayed about where we should go to finish the night. Now you have to know our car doesn't have a way to use our GPS so we drive solely by memory. I turned down the road I was certain would lead us to our friends house. As we were driving I remembered this house we had tried earlier in the week. We flipped the car around and went back. The people didn't answer but as we were walking away Sister Moore remembered how we had wanted to try the house across the street when we had come the time before. As we for closer I realized the lady was out there on her porch. Haha!   Not only was she on her porch but she was on her phone too. But a promptings a prompting so we walked up and said Hello. We awkwardly stood there and she finished the call. As we talked with her she told us how she had fallen away from going to church. She said it just wasn't for her. She said there was only one time she has really enjoyed going to church. She said it was when she went with her friend Margaret. She went on talking and expounding on the fact that she really felt at home in her friends church. It was just at that moment when our jaws almost fell to the floor. She said, "My friend Margaret goes to the Mormon Church" WHAT!!! That's crazy! As she said that I realized that we were there for her. She gladly accepted to come to church with us and said she would begin reading the Book of Mormon. As we got back to our car we were both shocked and amazed by how the Lord had truly lead us to this dear woman. We were even more shocked when we came to realize I had without a second thought taken the wrong road to get where we were going. Or was it really the wrong road? I truly believe that many times we feel as though we have made an insistent mistake. Maybe caused a few unnecessary problems. Satan wants us to feel as though we are the worst and that we have ruined everything. But our Heavenly Father knows us far better. In fact I know he gives us plenty of room to make some errors. He definitely does not expect us to be perfect.

I remember when I started driving in the city. I felt like I had no idea what I was doing. I became an expert at U-turns and figured out the perfect timing to allow my GPS to recalculate. Something that in the moment seemed so time consuming and really frustrating to an awesome driver such as myself became a very humbling  experience. It taught me to look at what the Lord was trying to teach me.

Well, needless to say, later on this week I yet again took a sort of wrong turn. As we drove down the road I saw a woman walking her dog. I thought maybe we should talk to her. I pulled over to figure out where to go and again the thought came. We got out and talked to her and turns out she is good friends with members as well! She said she would love to get baptized. It's definitely something she had been thinking a lot about. Wow! Again the Lord had taught me that my mistake wasn't going to ruin all the plans in fact maybe it was a part of the plans. I am learning that nothing we can do will frustrate the work of the Lord.

My last experience happens just the other day. We were trying to get ahold of this guy we had met earlier this transfer named Angel. I pulled up the contacts in our phone and there was only one Angel so I called it. Before the person picked up the phone I realized it wasn't the right Angel. A woman answered and she was so excited to hear from us. She said she had moved away and lost contact with the missionaries but would love to have home stop by. What a miracle!

I think of the scripture in doctrine and covenants that says, "That the fullness of my gospel might be proclaimed by the weak and the simple unto the ends of the world, and before kings and rulers." D&C 1:23
I know that I am very weak but with the Lord I am strong. I am so grateful for these amazing experiences that have reminded me of that. I really can't believe that my mission is coming to an end. I feel as though it just slipped through my fingers and flew away. I know I will always hold these amazing experiences near and dear to my heart. I love my mission and I love the Lord. I know that Jesus is the Christ. I know that this Gospel is true. I know that is has changed me and I hope it will continue to do so. I leave this testimony with you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Love, Sister Shelby Goudy

P.s. Sorry this is so long. One last thing to add!
President and Sister Huntsman always take the missionaries to the temple for a session the day before they go home. This transfer will end the day the temple closes for cleaning so they took us this week. We met at the mission office and went to the temple. Got some pictures then went to the mission home for a delicious Mormon dinner (Cafe Rio!!!).  After dinner we had a testimony meeting. It was so incredible to hear how our missions have truly changed each of our lives. It was so sad to think that will be our last time in the mission home though. Our last day in the mission field, instead of doing all that stuff (temple and out to eat) we will get to go out and finish our missions strong. They will send us out in a trio for the rest of the night. It will be so fun!

I love you all so much! I hope you have such a blessed week!

8.14.17 Skunk in the Courtyard!

Sorry Everyone!

I don't have to much time for a long email this week.  I did want to send some pictures though so you can see what a fun week we have had.

I have never seen so many critters until my mission. Yes, that is
indeed a skunk, walking right through an apartment complex.

We have had a ton of rain the last couple of nights. People's basement
s have flooded because their pumps have stopped working. They all have
pumps in the ground so they can drain the water out.

We have been enjoying our view of the Potomac.

We had lunch there today and have done studies there the last couple of days.

We got to visit our friend Felicia in the hospital.

Our friend, Thomina,  had her adorable baby. It was so weird not being able to hold him. She is very excited to get baptized and wants her sons to learn more as well.

I will definitely send something more spiritual uplifting next week but for now I want you all to know that I know this gospel is true. I have seen it bless my life as well as my family’s life. I know that through our Savior Jesus Christ, we all can change and become better. I know that God lives and He loves us. In the name of our avior,Jesus
Christ, Amen

Love,

8.7.17 Bye, Bye, Bug Spray

Hey Everyone!

I hope you have had a great time since the last time we talked. It hasn't been long but quite a bit has happened.  We had our car fast and we've put away our bug spray and pulled out our rain boats today.

At the beginning of the year our mission started doing a car fast. The first Saturday of every month, we hang up our car keys and pull out our good old missionary walking shoes. I have always despised this day until now. Sister Moore is one spirit following Rockstar! She has taught me that it's okay to not put a ton of plans in the schedule because the Lord WILL place people in your path. As we went out we planned to talk with everyone we saw and it was incredible! Not everyone was interested but we were able to teach each person in some way.

I might not have explained it very well last time I emailed. Our mission frequently sets goals for the week of how many new investigators we will find in that time. President wanted us to focus on the Book of Mormon and so we came up with the idea to find 531 new investigators in that week. Someone you have taught a lesson to, invited to do something and set up a time to met again.

As our mission has had a focus on the Book of Mormon this week we made sure to utilize a scripture in every contact, if we could. I came to understand that as it says in Preach My Gospel, "The Book of Mormon, combined with the Spirit, is your most powerful resource in conversion." Not only were the people we talked to enlightened by the spirit but they then had physical evidence that they could study and apply for themselves. I know my testimony of the Book of Mormon definitely increased. I would stop myself from just handing out a pamphlet and try to think of a verse or a chapter that would teach the same principle. It was no longer me just teaching what I know and became God’s children learning from His word.

It has been a fun couple of days!

I love you all so much and hope you have a great week!

8.3.17 Thursday Prep Day

8/3/17

Hey Everyone! You might have noticed the change in pday for the week. My new companion Sister Moore has a twin sister in the D.C. North mission so today we went to the temple. They were able to go with each other so that was really cool.

We had one of our Senior Couples take us out to lunch afterwards at their favorite place, 5 Guys.

So you are probably wondering about my new companion. I've always been bad about introducing them to you so I'll try to improve this transfer.  Her name is Sister Moore. She is toward the end of her mission too. She is such a hard worker and loves sharing the gospel. Like I said before she has a twin sister and then 4 brothers back at home. Funny story I actually have met her before the mission. So she is from South Jordan, Utah. My good friend Jessi and I went to her house and her orchestra concert our SR. Year. Super funny. Sister Moore loves to talk to everyone! I'll tell you more things in the coming weeks about her.

This week has been really fun! We went to missionary leadership council and president showed us this video. It was where they handed out all 531 pages of the Book of Mormon and invited people to look for the references to God in it. It was so cool to see that even though they weren't members of the church they absolutely loved reading the Book of Mormon. Many people we talk to think they have to be members to read it.

After watching the video President said he wants us to use the Book of Mormon more as our main recourse for teaching people. We have been working on using it in every finding approach and I am so impressed by the things it has brought about with it. President asked us what we thought would be a good finding goal to go with our Book of Mormon week and I said 531.  One for each page. He agreed so we are faithful looking for those 531 souls. Keep us in your prayers. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God I know that we will get nearer to Him as we read from its amazing 531 pages. I love you all and leave this with you in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ, Amen.

Change in Preparation Day for this week

Looks like Sis. Goudy's letter writing day will be on Thursday so they can attend the temple!

Never fear, we'll post when we get a letter!
